ECSK Welfare Officers
East Coast Shotokan Karate has 2x Welfare officers who are responsible for ensuring the well-being, safety and protection of all our members within the karate club. Their role helps promote a positive, respectful and inclusive environment.
These are the people to go to, alongside our Sensei's, if you have any welfare or safeguarding concerns.
Both our Welfare Officers are DBS qualified.
Billy Suffling 5th Dan
“I started karate in 1992, and been with East Coast Shotokan Karate club since the year 2000. I became the club secretary and welfare officer in 2000, and an instructor in 2001.
I was awarded my 5th Dan in December 2023 for my continued commitment and dedication to East Coast Shotokan Karate”

Maren Duvendack - 2nd Dan
"Hello! My name is Maren. I started my karate journey as a teenager in Germany. I was then fortunate enough to train with the Japan Karate Association in Tokyo for a few years which was a great experience but also quite challenging. One of my favourite instructors in Japan was Tatsuya Naka who was a very kind and inspirational teacher. When moving to Norwich and after a break from karate due to work commitments, I found East Coast Shotokan Karate, and I never looked back. I achieved my 1st Dan in 2019 and 2nd Dan more recently in March 2025. I am also currently training to be an assistant instructor.
I have taken on the role as the female welfare officer for ECSK to actively contribute to the well-being of our club members and to provide them with support and a safe space.
I look forward to seeing you all in the dojo!"
